Narrative
Educated at Battersea Polytechnic Secondary School for Boys. His degree in Science at Battersea Polytechnic was interrupted by WW1 and he got second class honours. He continued to get a Ph.D in Chemistry in Downing College, Cambridge, under Sir William Pope. His work was on organic compounds. He moved to Trinity college in 1930 where he got a fellowship. Elected F.R.S in 1947.
2nd Lieutenant in Royal Engineers special gas division in WW1.
He suffered from from Dupuytren's Contracture causing difficulties with his hands. In later life he had Alzheimer's disease.
